This spring has been a busy one here at ECM, but through all the activity, we’ve had some great groups of volunteers come and help keep us running at full force. We’d like to take a moment to thank them.
On March 19, the college ministry from Sunnybrook Christian Church
in Stillwater, OK, came for a morning and helped us with some landscaping projects at the La Mesa Garden Park, a collaborative project between East Central Ministries, La Mesa Presbyterian Church, La Mesa Elementary School, and sponsored by Bernalillo County. They have been partnering with New City Church here in Albuquerque for their spring mission trip for several years, and have spent a day with us during each of those trips. They helped us contour the ground, spread woodchips, build the foundation for an adobe planter bed wall, and refinish some picnic tables.
Then, on March 21, we hosted our second Growing Awareness work day for this season, also at the La Mesa Garden Park. We had volunteers from the UNM graduate student Bible study, the Jesuit Volunteer Corps
, La Mesa Presbyterian Church
, and more. They pulled weeds, cleared away dead leaves, picked up trash, built the adobe planter bed wall that the Sunnybrook volunteers laid the foundation for, and finished contouring the paths and priming the picnic tables started by the Sunnybrook volunteers.
From March 30 to April 1, the youth group from Hope Evangelical Free Church
here in Albuquerque joined us for their in-town mission trip. Over the course of those three days, they helped sort donations at The Common Good, clean up our duck pond, do some landscaping work on our grounds at the La Mesa Garden Park, and more!
On April 11, volunteers from New City Church’s Engage Event joined us at two different projects. That day was the first annual International District Health Fair, and a group of five volunteers helped out at that event, directing guests, helping vendors set up tents, and signing people in. Another group of three volunteers helped clean up our Penn House property, which hosts the homeless outreach ministry God Cares About You, as well as tutoring and training events led by New Mexico Women’s Global Pathways. The volunteers cleaned up the yard, clearing it of scrap wood, wind-blown trash, and weeds.
Finally, on April 25, several local churches joined together for a city-wide event called Serve the City, in which the participating churches organized service projects with non-profits and ministries throughout Albuquerque, and members of those churches then signed up for one of those projects. A group of about 10 volunteers joined us at The Common Good, and helped us sort donations, pull old merchandise off the racks, and clean the store.
We want to send a big thanks to all the volunteer groups – as well as our individual volunteers – who have joined us in the midst of all the activity this spring and helped us with this year’s growing season, doing some spring cleaning, and more. Your support is vital to what we do, and we are grateful for your help.
